These works are the culmination of Sandy’s research of early New Zealand history combined with Maori Mythology. Historical ‘facts’ are layered beneath mythological ‘stories’ to tell new tales of old characters both Maori and Pakeha in an exciting and innovative way.
The designs are mostly inspired by early Postage and Revenue stamps which have had the honour of recording moments in history since being created. Kings & Queens, new inventions, natural disasters have all been documented on stamps. Sandy has chosen this format as recognition of the role stamps have played with regards to representing a countries culture and spirit with images that are used daily by millions of people around the world.
